Current Research

My research focuses on understanding and managing diseases of hardwood trees within the Central Hardwood Forest Region. Current projects include:
  • Screening butternut for resistance to butternut canker disease
  • Documenting the incidence of walnut witches' broom in a butternut tree improvement program
  • Assessing recent sassafras wilt along the northern edge of its range in the Midwest
  • Spectral-based tools for disease phenotyping in trees
  • Research Interests

My research interests are focused on understanding genetic and biochemical mechanisms of tree resistance to pathogens. In addition, I am interested in developing more rapid phenotyping tools (e.g. with spectroscopy and machine learning) to facilitate resistant tree breeding and disease management.
