Abstract

Soil CO2, efflux, or soil respiration, represents a substantial component of carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Consequently, quantifying soil respiration over large areas and long time periods is an increasingly important goal. However, soil respiration rates vary dramatically in space and time in response to both environmental conditions and biological activity. Our objective in this chapter is to characterize the challenges in capturing this variability and accurately estimating soil respiration.
