Abstract

Presents some of the major findings of the first 4 years of the fifth inventory of Kansas' forest resources. Since 1994, total forest land area has increased by more than 580,000 acres, to 2,126,100 acres. As with earlier inventories, oak/hickory is the largest forest type on the landscape, making up more than 52.3 percent of all forested land. Softwoods make up approximately 5.4 percent of Kansas' forested acreage. In 2001-2004, the net volume of all live trees and salvable dead trees on timberland was 2.73 billion cubic feet. The increases in forest land area and volume are due, in part, to a change in the definition of forest land, which has allowed lands formerly categorized as "non-forest" to be defined as "forest."
